NEUROPSYCHOLOGICAL ASSESSMENT

Comprehensive Neuropsychological Assessment

A neuropsychological assessment looks at the pattern across attention, memory, learning, processing speed, reasoning and executive functioning to work out what is contributing to the difficulties you are having. We combine the test results with your history and everyday functioning, and build the assessment around the question you need answered.

Is Neuropsychological Assessment the right service for me?

People usually seek neuropsychological assessment because there is a gap between what they expect themselves to be able to do and what is happening in everyday life

Difficulties with memory, attention, processing speed, executive functioning or complex tasks can arise for different reasons. Fatigue, pain, sleep, medication and mental health can also affect performance. People with similar concerns may show very different assessment patterns.
The assessment examines cognitive strengths and difficulties alongside developmental and medical history, current circumstances and everyday functioning. Its purpose is to explain what may be contributing to the difficulty and what the findings mean in practical terms.

What does Neuropsychological Assessment look at?

The areas included depend on the question the assessment needs to answer. We begin with a broad picture of cognitive functioning, then examine particular areas in more depth.

Intellectual and reasoning abilities

Intellectual assessment looks at how a person reasons, solves problems and works with different kinds of information. We consider the pattern across abilities as well as overall performance.

Attention, processing speed and working memory

Attention is not one ability. Assessment can examine how consistently someone maintains attention, how efficiently they process information, and how well they can hold information in mind while working with it.

Learning, memory and executive functioning

Memory assessment examines more than how much can be recalled: how information is learned, whether it is retained, and how efficiently it can be retrieved. Executive functioning covers planning, cognitive flexibility, inhibition and problem solving.

Where reading, writing or mathematics is part of the referral question, those skills can be assessed directly within Tier 2 or Tier 3.

How does Neuropsychological Assessment work?

Intake and referral question

We review the reason for the assessment, relevant records and background information so the testing is built around the question that needs to be answered.

Clinical interview

The neuropsychologist takes a detailed history, including the cognitive difficulties you have noticed, when they began, how they vary, and the medical, developmental, psychological and everyday factors that may be relevant.

Cognitive testing

You complete standardised one-to-one tasks selected to examine the cognitive areas relevant to the referral question. The amount and type of testing depend on the assessment tier.

Additional information where useful

For some assessments, information from a parent, teacher or another person who knows you well is clinically useful. This is collected with consent and only when it helps answer the referral question.

Interpretation and formulation

The results are interpreted as a pattern. Test performance is considered alongside history, current circumstances and everyday functioning, including factors such as fatigue, pain, sleep, medication and mental health where relevant.

Feedback and report

You have a feedback appointment to go through the findings and recommendations. A written neuropsychological report is provided within four weeks.

What is the appointment like?

The testing part of the assessment is completed one to one with the neuropsychologist. Standardised cognitive tasks are administered consistently so the results can be interpreted accurately.
Before each task, the neuropsychologist explains what it involves. You complete one task at a time and can ask questions at any point. Differences between tasks help show your overall pattern of cognitive strengths and difficulties.
A support person can attend the interview. Cognitive testing is usually completed privately with the neuropsychologist, but your support person can wait nearby and return afterwards.
WHO WILL I MEET?

Clinical Neuropsychologist

Ruth works across Autism and ADHD assessment, neuropsychological assessment and therapy. Her neuropsychology training is particularly useful when several factors may be contributing to the same difficulty, because the task is to work out what is producing the pattern and what that means for intervention.

Which assessment tier do I need?

The tier reflects how many cognitive questions need to be examined in depth. Tier 1 suits most enquiries. Tier 2 and Tier 3 add focused testing when the referral question extends beyond the core cognitive assessment.

Tier 1 · Foundational

Clinical interview, cognitive testing across core thinking skills, screening of memory, attention and executive functioning, feedback appointment and written report.

Tier 2 · Expanded

Includes Tier 1 and adds focused testing of one further area. Academic skills such as reading, writing or numeracy can be selected as the additional focus where relevant.

Tier 3 · Comprehensive

Includes the core assessment and in-depth testing of two further areas, with a more detailed report.

NOT SURE WHICH?

If you are not sure which tier fits the question you need answered, the free 15-minute consult can be used to work this out before booking.

What do I receive after the assessment?

You receive a feedback appointment and a written neuropsychological report.

The report brings together the referral question, relevant background information, cognitive findings and clinical interpretation. It describes the pattern of strengths and difficulties, explains the processes that are most likely to be contributing to the concerns that led to assessment, and provides recommendations linked to the findings.

Where the findings are relevant to learning, work, treatment planning or everyday functioning, the report explains the practical implications of the cognitive profile rather than presenting test scores in isolation.
Written reports are provided within four weeks.

Neuropsychological Assessment FAQ

You do not need to choose it alone. The tier depends on the question the assessment needs to answer and how many areas need detailed testing. A free 15-minute consult can be used to work this out before you book.

Yes. Reading, writing and numeracy can be assessed within Tier 2 or Tier 3, where academic skills are selected as one of the focused testing areas.

Yes. Giftedness and Twice Exceptionality Assessment uses the Tier 1 neuropsychological structure. Where Autism Assessment is also being completed, the two questions can be considered as part of the broader assessment plan.
A support person is welcome to attend the clinical interview. Cognitive testing itself is usually completed with only you and the neuropsychologist in the room so that another person’s presence or reactions do not affect performance.
No. Take your usual medications at their usual times unless a clinician has specifically told you otherwise. If you take ADHD medication and the appointment falls around the time it usually wears off, tell us beforehand so we can consider the timing of the appointment.
No. Wear glasses or contact lenses if you normally use them and bring anything that helps you stay comfortable. There is no studying or practice required.
You can take a break at any point without needing to give a reason, and the neuropsychologist will also offer breaks during the appointment. Movement and fidgeting are fine. Some tasks need to be completed while seated at the desk because the testing materials are in front of you, but you can move and stretch between tasks. You are welcome to bring fidgets, a drink, sunglasses, an extra layer of clothing or anything else that makes the appointment more comfortable. At an in-person appointment, we can also adjust things such as the lighting where possible. If asking for something during the appointment would be difficult, you can contact us beforehand so it can be arranged before you arrive. Take your usual medications at their usual times and wear glasses or contact lenses if you normally use them. If you take ADHD medication and the appointment is scheduled around the time your medication usually wears off, let us know beforehand so we can consider the timing of the appointment. There is nothing you need to prepare for the testing beforehand.
The clinical principles are the same, but paediatric assessment includes additional information from the people and settings around the young person. For children and teenagers, the process includes parent intake and interview, cognitive testing of approximately three hours, relevant teacher input, a feedback appointment and a detailed report. The three assessment tiers work in the same way as the adult tiers. Child and adolescent fees are $250 higher at each tier because the assessment includes additional paediatric materials and supervision.
A neuropsychological assessment and Autism or ADHD Assessment answer different clinical questions. Cognitive testing is used to understand cognitive functioning; it is not required to identify Autism or ADHD. If Autism, ADHD or both are also part of the question, assessment can be considered alongside the neuropsychological assessment. The additional assessment work is quoted according to the work required. Learning assessment is completed within the neuropsychological tiers. Reading, writing or numeracy can be selected as a focused area in Tier 2 or Tier 3. Giftedness and Twice Exceptionality Assessment uses the Tier 1 neuropsychological structure rather than a separate testing process. For adults already completing Autism or ADHD Assessment with Mindkit, a neuropsychological assessment receives a flat $500 discount from the usual standalone adult tier fee: Tier 1 $2,180, Tier 2 $2,680 and Tier 3 $3,180.
No. A referral is not required, though one from a GP or another treating medical practitioner is encouraged.
Written reports are provided within four weeks.
