Is a Strategy Session the right service for me?

A Strategy Session may suit you when you want to address a specific concern through a short period of psychological support. You may have tried several approaches without finding one you can continue using, or you may be unsure which changes are realistic in your current circumstances.

You might want help planning for burnout, supporting an Autistic or ADHD teenager, or managing a recurring difficulty in a relationship. Other concerns include adjusting to changes after a brain injury or managing dyslexia or dyscalculia at work or in study.

Existing reports can give Rumi useful background before you meet. If you want regular weekly or fortnightly sessions, Individual Therapy may be more suitable.

YOU DO NOT NEED A DIAGNOSIS TO BOOK

Mindkit offers diagnostic Assessments and Second Opinion Assessments as separate services.

What will Rumi discuss with me?

Rumi begins with the concern you want help with. You discuss what happens in the situations that are difficult, what you have already tried and the results of those attempts. If an approach helped in some circumstances but was difficult to use in others, Rumi will ask about those differences.

Your health, time and support

The recommendations also need to account for your current health, available time and support. Rumi will ask what you can manage at present and what makes an activity difficult to begin or continue.

You do not need to arrive with a plan for the workbook. You and Rumi discuss what it should address during the appointments.

How does a Strategy Session work?

There are six steps, from your first enquiry to the appointment where you go through your workbook.

Tell us what you would like help with

Use the enquiry form to describe the concern in a few sentences. If you prefer to discuss suitability first, book a free 15-minute telehealth consultation.

Send relevant information you already have

This might include previous reports, letters, plans or your own notes. The practice team can help if you are unsure what to include.

Book your appointments

We book your three appointments on separate days. To claim Medicare rebates, send your GP mental health treatment plan and referral before the first appointment.

Meet with Rumi

Rumi reads your material before your first appointment. You then meet for two one-hour appointments on different days.

Receive your workbook

Rumi writes a short workbook, about 10 pages, from what you discussed. It is sent before your third appointment.

Go through your workbook

In your third appointment, you and Rumi go through the workbook and discuss questions or changes. Rumi sends the amended version afterwards.

What are the appointments like?

Each appointment is one hour, and the three appointments are on different days.

Before the appointments

You can bring a support person, use notes and send information in writing beforehand. Ruth reads your relevant reports and material in the week before you meet.

Adjustments during the appointments

Breaks are available at any point. You can ask Ruth to repeat or reword a question, take notes, move around or use a fidget. Eye contact is optional, and for telehealth you can keep your camera off.

What will be in my workbook?

The workbook explains Rumi’s understanding of your concern and why the recommended activities have been included. It contains instructions for trying the strategies you discussed, including where to begin and how much to do at a time.

Written for your circumstances

The activities are written for your circumstances and the amount you told Rumi you could manage. You are not expected to complete the whole workbook at once.

Going through your workbook

At your third appointment, you can discuss instructions that are unclear or activities that would be difficult to use. Rumi makes the agreed amendments and sends you an updated version. You do not need to complete every activity before that appointment.

If a doctor referred you

If you were referred by a GP or another doctor, Rumi sends them a written summary of the sessions and recommendations at the end. You can ask to see the summary.

What support is available afterwards?

The Strategy Session does not continue into ongoing weekly or fortnightly therapy with Rumi. If you would like ongoing therapy, the practice team can discuss available options with you.

Support worker sessions

Support worker sessions are available if you would like help using the workbook. A support worker can go through an activity with you and help organise the practical steps involved. These sessions are booked and paid for separately. You do not need to be receiving ongoing Mindkit therapy to access support work.

What do I receive after the assessment?

Both report options follow the same assessment process. The fee differs because of the document you receive at the end.

Diagnostic Letter

One Page

Confirms the assessment outcome. For people who need formal documentation without the detailed history, formulation and recommendations.

Comprehensive Report

Approximately 10 to 15 pages

Includes relevant developmental and clinical history, ADHD characteristics, questionnaire findings, clinical formulation and recommendations.

Fees for a Strategy Session

Each appointment is $400, and the fee includes your workbook. With an eligible Medicare referral, you receive a rebate of $101.55 per appointment. No GST is added.

Each appointment

$298.45

After the Medicare rebate of $101.55 ($400 without a rebate).

All three appointments

$895.35

After Medicare rebates, including your workbook ($1,200 without rebates).

AFTER HOURS AND CANCELLATIONS

After-hours appointments cost a flat $15 more. Please give at least two business days’ notice to cancel or reschedule; with less notice, the full fee applies.

MEDICARE

Medicare rebates are available with a GP mental health treatment plan and referral. Each appointment uses one of your rebated sessions for the year, and your entitlement depends on your referral and how many rebated sessions you have left.

We will check the referral information and explain the expected rebates before booking. Please send your referral before your first appointment. If you do not have one, you can speak with your GP about eligibility or book privately and pay the full fee.
