Neuropsychological assessment is designed to assess how a person’s brain functions, identifying their cognitive strengths and challenges. Cognitive functions include mental processes such as attention, memory, language, and planning.
Assessment is often recommended when there are problems with a person’s memory or thinking skills. These issues can have various causes, including medical conditions, inherited conditions, or mental health concerns.

Neuropsychological assessment is available in-person in Abbortsford, Melbourne. Some types of assessment may be able to be conducted via Telehealth. Please contact us to discuss your needs.
Waiting times for assessment vary depending on the type of assessment required. Please contact us for more information or to make a booking.
A referral from your doctor, psychologist or support coordinator is generally required. Self-referrals are accepted in some situation.
- On the day of the assessment, take any medications as usual.
- Bring glasses or hearing aids if required.
- Try to get a good night’s sleep the night before.
- Bring food and water for the duration of the assessment.
- Bring any relevant test results (e.g. school reports, imaging reports, or other relevant medical information such as your list of medications).
Yes, a carer, family member, or other support person can attend with you. While they may provide information during the initial interview stage of assessment, they will be asked to leave prior to formal testing in order to ensure privacy is maintained.
An appointment usually takes 3-4 hours including breaks, though the length of the assessment may vary depending on what is needed. Assessments generally take place in the morning, and may be split over two sessions if required.
Your results are shared with you and with the referrer. You may choose to ask the referrer to share this information with other treating professionals.
Fees for assessment vary according to the type of neuropsychology assessment and time required. A $200 deposit is required one week prior to assessment. Please contact us for further information about fees.
Medicare rebates are currently unavailable for neuropsychological assessment. While some private health funds offer a rebate for assessment, this is rare. Please consult with your health fund to find out what is covered. The NDIS may fund neuropsychological assessment in some cases.
